USB-to-Ethernet adapters

My studio doesn’t have real internet. I use my phone as a hotspot, and plugged a USB-to-Ethernet adapter into my MacBook. Hammered away at it for ages, but couldn’t connect to PolyPulse. Is there a preferred adapter for doing this kind of thing?

I bought this one and couldn’t make it work:

My connection attempt was with the firmware just before the current one. I finally put Polypulse in my van and drove to the nearest ethernet cable. Which worked fine, of course- updated with no trouble at all.

I think the usb ethernet adapater looks fine. Can you check in network settings if it shows up / is detected by the computer under system preferences → network? On the left you should see a list of devices. In that list there should be a network called something like ethernet adapter USB 100/1000 LAN.

Then on the PolyPulse can you check if it shows anything in the network settings (press [settings] and scroll down)? At least ethernet IPv6 should show a value.

Now if there is an ethernet IPv6 value but still you can’t get http://polypulse.local/ to load, try turning off your WiFi.

Let me know if that works!

Settings on PolyPulse and my MacBook both look good, but I get “This site can’t be reached” when WiFi is on and “No internet” when WiFi is off.

Can you post a screenshot of the mac network settings of the USB ethernet adapter?

I don’t have a mac laying around here so I can’t look for myself

Looks like Polypulse has IPv6 but no IPv4, and the USB dongle has IPv4 but no IPv6.

So your USB adapter is fine!

Try this on the PolyPulse:

IP assignment: static
ethernet IPv4: 169.254.206.200 (press edit to type new value, use the same numbers as your computer up until the last dot, then use a different number between 0 and 255)

Then restart the OS: [edit]+[settings] → shutdown PolyPulse

After about 10 seconds, remove the power cable, wait a few seconds and put the power cable back in.

Then in your browser type in the IPv4 value as used above for the PolyPulse

That worked, once I realized that I’d unplugged the USB dongle at some point and it had switched to using a new IPv4. So I went through the process on PolyPulse again and it’s finally connected.

For the next knuckle-dragging Neanderthal who has this problem: to change the IPv4 on PolyPulse, you have to switch from ‘static’ to ‘dynamic’ and back again before you can type in a new number.

Ah so you can reach the file manager now? That is great!

Do you still need to keep the WiFi turned off when browsing to the IPv4?
Does http://polypulse.local now also work when a static IPv4 is set?

Yep, http://polypulse.local now works. Sort-of.

Chrome said “No internet” when I tried it with WiFi off, and I needed to type the numbers to connect. But once I typed the numbers, http://polypulse.local seemed to work again.

Thanks!!

Alright thanks for letting us know!

Ah that is a bug. It was probably already on static? I fixed it for next update.

I’ve added this to the manual here Network - PolyPulse manual
